Start with Claude Free. For regular individual use, Pro is the sensible first paid tier.
Claude Pro is US$20/month or US$200/year and adds more usage, Claude Code, unlimited Projects, Research and broader model access. Max starts at US$100/month and is primarily for frequent users who already know Pro's limits interrupt valuable work. Team and Enterprise add organisation-level administration and controls.

Which Claude plan should you choose?
Choose Free if…
You are testing Claude, use it occasionally, or have not yet found a recurring limitation that costs you time.
Choose Pro if…
You use Claude regularly for writing, research, coding or document work and want more capacity plus paid features such as Research and Claude Code.
Choose Max 5x if…
Pro is already valuable to you but its usage allowance regularly interrupts professional work.
Choose Max 20x if…
Claude is embedded in intensive daily workflows and the additional capacity is worth substantially more than the subscription cost.
Choose Team if…
You need shared administration, billing, SSO and organisation features rather than a collection of personal subscriptions.
Choose Enterprise if…
You need fine-grained permissions, SCIM, audit logs, custom retention, network controls or enterprise compliance features.
Three questions before you upgrade
- Are you hitting a real limit? If Free already handles your actual workload, there is little reason to pay early.
- Do you need features or capacity? Pro is the first feature-and-usage upgrade; Max is mainly about much heavier individual usage and priority.
- Does the higher tier pay for itself? Max makes most sense when interruptions to valuable professional work cost more than the subscription difference.
SAVKAAS recommends choosing a tier because it solves a demonstrated workflow problem—not because it has the longest feature list.
Claude subscription vs Claude API pricing
A Claude Free, Pro, Max or Team subscription is not the same thing as API access. Anthropic states that paid Claude subscriptions and the Claude Console/API are separate products, and API usage is billed separately.
If you mainly chat with Claude, work with documents or use the included Claude applications, compare the subscription plans above. If you are building software with Claude models through the API, budget for API usage separately.
Claude Team vs personal plans
Team is designed for organisations rather than simply being “Pro with more messages.” Standard seats currently cost US$25 per seat/month on monthly billing or US$20 per seat/month when billed annually. Premium seats cost US$125 monthly or US$100 monthly when billed annually. Team adds central billing and administration, SSO, organisation search and other management features.
Enterprise adds more advanced identity, security, compliance, retention and spend controls. Anthropic currently lists Enterprise at US$20 per seat plus usage at API rates.

Is Claude free?
Yes. Claude has a Free plan and it is the sensible place to test the product against your real workflow before upgrading.
How much is Claude Max?
Claude Max has two individual tiers: Max 5x at US$100 per month and Max 20x at US$200 per month. They are designed for substantially heavier usage than Pro.
Is Claude Pro worth it?
Pro is most compelling when you use Claude regularly and Free limits or missing paid capabilities are interrupting useful work. Occasional users may be better staying on Free.
Does Claude Pro include Claude Code?
Yes. Anthropic currently lists Claude Code as included with Pro and Max.
Does a paid Claude plan include API usage?
No. Anthropic treats Claude subscriptions and Console/API usage as separate products, so API usage is billed separately.
